Congrat’s to both of you,
And thanks for the great job.
Hey Dan;
Just wanted to applaud your efforts yesterday at the Albany truckers protest! Good for you guys! You and yours are right on the mark with the fuel taxes, price of fuel and inattention/lack of response from elected officials. From the Administration on down to local politicos there is a blind eye turned our way.
We are a group of independent log truck owner/operators out in Washington state. (Southwest Washington to be specific) Tomorrow (6/21) we are staging a fuel protest at Exit 72 off of Interstate 5 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. This is our second protest since April. The high cost of diesel is killing us all and we are slated for a fuel tax increase July 1 of nine and a half cents a gallon.
It is our goal tomorrow to get some answers from our politicians and a “holiday” from the tax increase. Washington state has one of the highest fuel tax rates in the nation; we pay 28 cents per gallon now with 37 cents peeking over the horizon. Couple that with federal fuel tax and we are out of the park.
The log truckers in the state have not had a raise in hauling compensation since 1986! I know that sounds unbelievable, but true. The surcharges paid by Weyerhaeuser Corporation (the big gun in this area) is at 17% — an insult for sure. We are at the liberty of the logging contractors who set the hauling rates and have been working with our state legislators for a “rubber stamp” approval of negotiating our own fees. We had a Bill in the hopper this past session that made it out of committee and back to the floor for a vote, but died there because of the “short session” this year (every other year we have a regular session and we’ll be back in 09 to push the Bill through.)
This has gotten lengthy, but I wanted to give you a peek at what we are doing and who we are. I’ll be giving an interview today on Sirius Radio’s Trucker News with Evan Lockridge at 2 p.m. your time. Take a listen if you have a chance.
I would love to see ALL OF US TRUCKERS have protests either simultaneously or concurrently until we get some action. Small businesses are being upended for sure. Take care and pass my congratulation to your members !
Sincerely,
Sherrie Bond

Dear Friend,
As the state rep for the OOU Inc., I would like to share a personal story and invite you to cover our event. We are a group spread out nationwide with a common goal to help the trucking industry, consumers and our neighbors who are struggling with the high cost of fuel.
The New York OOU chapter began with one trucker and one assemblyman hosting a roundtable event in Montgomery County aiming to get our message out, organize and ultimately better inform local truckers of the challenges we face in these tough times. It has now grown into a state wide out cry for our state government to rein in overspending and eliminate unnecessary taxes, most notably the “Ton-Mile Tax”. We have worked tirelessly to build support in the State Legislature and have been encouraged by the outpouring of support in communities across the state. We have begun to engage supporters through informative events, petition drives, phone banks, voter registration drives and rally’s.
We expect attendance at our June 19th, rally to be tremendous and will include assembly members, senators, school district officials, firemen, first responders, highway superintendents who are all coming out to say no more, a change is coming in NY. Our friends and neighbors are tired of feeling like no one is listening. On behalf of the many supporters from across the state, thank you for your time and consideration.
For more information about the June 19th. rally, please do not hesitate to contact me at (518) 810-1776, to obtain an event flyer.
Sincerely,
Charles Claburn
New York State Rep. / Owner Operators United Inc.
OOU is Taking Action
We want to let the growing number of members in OOU to be aware of what we’re doing on behalf of our members and the trucking community. Out most most recent initiative was to forward proposed federal legislation to Representative Cliff Stearns (R – Florida) seeking a reduction of the federal diesel fuel tax to equal that which is paid for gasoline. This proposed legislation will amount to a reduction of $.06 cents per gallon for diesel fuel if it is passed.
We recognize that this is not an earth shattering amount, but it is a start at reducing at least a small portion of the financial burden that we are experiencing. The current diesel fuel tax generates approximately $9.8 billion dollars in revenue for the government. This tax reduction if fully implemented will result in decreasing the federal revenue from that tax by about $2.45 billion dollars annually.
Congressman Stearns office is interested in sponsoring the legislation and we have discussed the proposal with his representatives. We are aware that there are other legislators who are interested in this proposal and in fact there appears to be at least one other bill that addresses this issue which is in the preliminary phases of consideration.
This is an election year and every elected Representative is paying close attention to the thinking of their constituencies. As we work to help you, it is always of great importance for each OOU member and trucker to be in contact with their individual elected officials. Letters, emails and phone calls to elected officials are important. They clearly send a message that you vote, pay attention to issues and can influence others in their votes.
At this point our discussions are in the initial phases, but we do have the ear of those that can make it happen. You can help.
Here is a proposed note which you can cut and paste and send to your Representative. If thousands of emails were received by Representatives, this action could be accomplished quickly
I have recently learned that the potential exists for legislation to reduce the federal diesel fuel tax to equal the tax that which is levied on gasoline. This will result in a $.06 cent reduction in the price of diesel fuel. Many over the road truckers drive about 100,000 mile or more every year and this reduction could save as much as $1000 dollars annually. That money could be used in a variety of ways to improve the quality of life of truck drivers who provide a critical and essential service to America. Additionally this money will be injected back into our economy to help propel the United States out of any possible recession. I urge you to support any initiatives in this arena and I look forward to your response.
You can contact your representative via this link.
OOU is working on a variety of issues to benefit truckers. We’re focused on you. We invite you to join with us in contacting your representative. If you are not a member of OOU please consider becoming involved. You can join here.
Wishing the best for you and yours,
Dan Little

We have worked hard to find an artist to record our song to get it out on Radio for all our trucker friends. We will keep trying!! We are also going to release this song this month on our own. This song should be for sale on the new myspace site as soon as we can get it up. www.myspace.com/HillBillyBarry the main home page for WHEN THE BIG RIG’S DON’T ROLL”, I am building this page right now. There will be video on this page and pictures of the trip to Washington D.C. We are also working on a t-shirt, bumper stickers and even a hat. As this stuff comes up we want your comments. If you like it say you like it. If you don’t, say you don’t. There will be a percentage of every song download sent to The OwnerOperatorsUnited we are not going to do the old 10 present deal most people do. Were hoping for a 20% just for down loading the song back to OOU.Inc. The price per downloading the song will be no more than $1.50 a download. approx. .40 cents will go to SnowCap. That’s what they charge to handle downloads on myspace. SnowCap is a little higher but it is easier to find. We’re starting with down loads first. If you want a CD we are working with the artist Don Johnson on making a CD. The song your hearing is being re-mastered at this time. When wer’e ready, say 1st of July. We are opening the doors on this song. Any radio station can play it. We are asking for your help. I’m starting to think, this is the way it should be. I will say this, the song has been turned down by some Nashville Record labels Because: They said they’re looking for songs that are more “RADIO FRIENDLY”!!!. The statement that got me in a little trouble with the labels” SOME ONE LOOSING THERE JOB, THERE HOME ,THERE WAY OF LIFE, CAN’T FEED THERE FAMILY ISN’T RADIO FRIENDLY”!! A REAL SONG THAT RELATES TO PEOPLE!! I think some people just don’t want the public to know the truth. They like keeping us all in the dark. Well thank God for you, myspace an free speech.
